Club 5 / FIVE Nightclub
Madison
Summary
Club 5, at 5 Applegate Court in Madison, Wisconsin, opened in September 1998 as a large LGBTQ entertainment complex created by Ed Grunewald to replace his smaller Manoeuvres bar. The venue combined several distinct spaces under one roof—a restaurant and main dance bar, the levi/leather "Barracks" men's bar, the "Planet Q" video dance bar, and (from 1999) the "Fox Hole" women's bar—and became Madison's primary LGBTQ dance destination, a role intensified after a 1996 fire destroyed the Hotel Washington venues.
After Grunewald's death in 2008, bartender and manager Dave Eick took over ownership. He renamed the venue "FIVE Nightclub" in 2012 and removed the Barracks during a remodel. The bar survived a near-closure in 2014 through community fundraising and rent relief, and again endured the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns of 2020–21. FIVE marked its 25th anniversary in 2023 and continued as a leading LGBTQ venue in the Madison area.
