Seaway Inn

Milwaukee

Summary

Seaway Inn was a popular Milwaukee gay bar and restaurant at the corner of Jefferson and Wells Streets, near the Pfister Hotel. Otto Schuler opened it in 1959 in a former vegetarian restaurant building, the Ambrosia House, and named it for the St. Lawrence Seaway. It was remembered as a cozy, woody bar with a roaring fireplace and was known for its "Christmas in July" parties. Slated for demolition in a redevelopment, it closed in 1971 and was torn down in 1972.

Schuler then relocated the operation, opening a new Seaway restaurant and Jamie's bar on South 2nd Street.
