Leaded Shade
Milwaukee
Summary
The Leaded Shade operated on South 1st Street from late 1973 to late 1977. It opened as a new kind of women's bar, owned and operated by Pete and Bev Nilsson and managed by Sharon Dixon, catering to a younger, feminist-minded crowd. The building had earlier housed a series of gay bars known as Mickey's Cove, The Cove, and The Backroom. After a period of closure, the bar reopened in 1976 under new management as a predominantly men's bar, though it remained heavily mixed.
It served food, including burgers praised by a local restaurant critic, and faded from advertising by late 1977. The Nilssons went on to open the Lost & Found.
