Dangle Lounge

Madison

Summary

The Dangle Lounge, at 119 E. Main Street in Madison, Wisconsin, was opened in 1966 by brothers Al and Thomas Reichenberger. Originally a piano bar, it became the first all-nude go-go bar in Wisconsin and later the first Madison venue to feature male strippers, making it one of the most controversial bars in the state. It drew a mixed crowd and was a notable counterculture and nightlife landmark; Madison's alternative newspaper The Isthmus was reportedly conceived there in 1976.

Through the late 1960s and 1970s the bar was at the center of repeated legal and political fights with city officials over obscenity and entertainment ordinances. A federal court ruling protected nude performance under the First Amendment in controlled settings, and the bar went fully nude in late 1970. The Madison City Council ultimately voted to close it, and it shut down on New Year's Eve 1982. The Reichenbergers operated another venue, "Visions," on E. Washington Avenue from 1978.
