What we cite and why

History work is only as trustworthy as its sources. This page explains our citation practice, licensing, and how we write.

Much of the foundational research behind Wisconsin LGBTQ history was gathered over decades by the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project (WLHP), founded by Don Schwamb in 1994. Their work is shared under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0. We adapt facts into structured archive fields and rewrite prose into neutral summaries. We do not republish source pages verbatim.

Queer Wisconsin is an independent archive project. We are grateful for WLHP’s research and wish them continued success. WLHP remains the active home for news, walking tours, exhibits, podcasts, and community events. We preserve searchable records, citations, and community contributions — history, memory, and love held in a form you can filter and explore.

When an entry lists a source URL on archive.wislgbthistory.com, that is the research page we consulted. Image credits often name WLHP or contemporary publications (GPU News, In Step, Wisconsin Light, and others). Newer contributions may cite newspapers, oral histories, official sites, or contributor-submitted photos with permission.

Editorial standards we aim for: clear dates and places when known; uncertainty stated when evidence is thin; living-person care and privacy flags when needed; and every published change reviewed by a human moderator. See also About and our privacy policy.
