Your Place
Milwaukee
Summary
Your Place, widely known as "The Y.P.," was a highly popular Milwaukee gay bar from May 1965 to July 1994, and was the first gay bar in what became the city's primary gayborhood. Opened by Jim Dorn and his partner Jerry Bentley as a family-operated venture, it deliberately took a discreet name and used only blue light bulbs at the entrance so patrons could make plans without revealing their destination.
Ahead of its time, it featured Milwaukee's first light-up gay-bar dance floor and a landscaped back patio used for weekend barbecues and shows. Dorn, affectionately called "Mother Dorn," later sold the bar, which passed through several owners before reopening as Partners in 1989. It briefly returned to the Your Place name before being converted to a gentleman's club in 1994.
