Shamrock Bar & Grille

Madison

Summary

The Shamrock Bar & Grille at 117 W. Main Street is one of Madison, Wisconsin's longest-lived LGBT bars, opened in 1986 just a block off the Capitol Square. For much of its existence it was the only downtown gay and lesbian bar, known both as a friendly neighborhood tavern and for its grill food, Friday fish fry, and Sunday brunch. It was owned for much of its history by J.J. O'Connell.

From December 1991 to September 1994 the bar operated under the name Phaze II as a dance venue, after which the original Shamrock name was restored. It outlasted a number of nearby competing bars and remained in operation into the 2020s.
