Regency East

Milwaukee

Summary

Regency East was a Milwaukee bar that operated from 1965 to 1970, remembered as a semi-elegant venue in a rough neighborhood along North Water Street. Its address appears inconsistently across the scarce surviving documentation, listed variously at 1400, 1758, and 1840 N. Water Street, though contributors place it at the 1758 N. Water Street site later well known as the Trocadero.

The building was constructed in 1890 by the Schlitz Brewing Company as one of the earliest brewery-owned taverns and passed through many names and operators. Richard (Dick) Shannon ran it as a gay bar called the Regency East Lounge through the end of the decade. Afterward the building became Little Caesar's Cocktail Lounge and later Under the Bridge, briefly hosting a pop-up LGBT night called Babylon in 2000.
