Gay 90's
Milwaukee
Summary
Gay 90's was a Milwaukee bar that operated from 1945 to 1968 across three successive locations, ending at 433 W. Michigan Street next to the Royal Hotel. A contributor remembered the "Old Gay 90s" as a piano and showtunes bar that, while not strictly a gay bar, was a well-known gay hangout. Its second location, opened around 1950 on Plankinton Avenue, also served food.
The final incarnation was sometimes called "Baron's Gay 90s" and remained open until the block was cleared in 1968 to provide parking for the Royal Hotel. Despite its long run, the bar never appeared in the national gay guides of the era.
