Antlers Hotel

Milwaukee

Summary

Antlers Hotel was a large downtown Milwaukee hotel that became a well-known cruising destination for gay men. Opened in the 1920s as an eleven-floor, men-oriented establishment with hundreds of rooms and extensive recreational facilities, it housed many single men and sailors, and over the following decades it appeared in numerous early gay travel guides. Those guides typically advised that the upper floors, especially on Saturday nights, offered the best chance of meeting other men.

The building also hosted a long succession of ballrooms, theaters, and nightclubs, including a venue that staged early Miss Gay Wisconsin pageants. The hotel was demolished in 1980.
