Ten Hundred East
Milwaukee
Summary
The earliest located advertising dates to January 1973, but patrons recalled it being open several years earlier. Before the 1973 arrival of the city's first large gay disco, the Factory, it was widely regarded as the place to see and be seen. Even after dance bars opened downtown, the bar remained a popular spot to begin the evening. Contemporary guides described a remodeled brick interior with dancing, live entertainment, a piano bar, and a mix of clientele ranging from college-age patrons to an older crowd.
A former patron recalled the owner as George Defenbach.
